Wise Words From Arnold Palmer…
I remember reading the following quote some years ago from the legendary Arnold Palmer…
“It’s a funny thing. The more I practice, the luckier I get!”
That seems strangely apt after my performance last weekend!
Coming off the high of a good round and into the next week’s competition is always tough. The distinct lack of practice didn’t help! I did manage to have a lesson with James Whitaker where we established why I lacked consistency, but I didn’t have enough time to really practice it.
The weekends competition was the ‘Presidents Putter’, which is code for ‘put the tees as far back as possible and have the most difficult pin positions available’. Not that I’m making excuses… but it was seriously difficult. Like the course isn’t tough enough already!
It didn’t take long for me to figure out that it wasn’t going to be my day. In fact, it was after the double bogey on the 1st hole! I finished with just two pars in 18 holes, and a net score of 81. Not even close to where I need to be.
Looking through my Golfshake stats for this particular round made for more depressing reading. Only 5 FIR, and only 1 GIR… which is 5%! Stats like that are never going to help to post a good score. Oh.. the penalties didn’t help either!
So, practice is key. Something I perhaps took for granted. But not this week! I have spent a lot of time in the office simply rehearsing the first part of my backswing, which was something that James pointed out as a key thing for me. I also spent some time down at the practice ground at Howley Hall.

After the practice session, I sent James a swing for him to have a look at. He was pretty pleased with the progress since my lesson last week. However, I am still having some issues though with my alignment. This is something that has always plagued me… and something I really struggle with on the golf course. Still, we’re making progress so I guess that is something…
So, back to the quote from Arnold Palmer… “It’s a funny thing. The more I practice, the luckier I get”. Maybe he was onto something!
